'Gestures of Soil and Solace' is the artist's approach to surrealism with a coming of age tone. The abstract landscape comprised of acrylic layering in the background represents the subject's dissociation to their surroundings, while the foreground is focused on the subject themselves and a comforting insect. The ant is meant to symbolize grounding, community, and an unexpected welcome to something new or self reflection. The secret beauty of this work is it was once a tree that continuously morphed with each layer of paint until reaching the concept viewed today. The artist believes the rough texture from seen and unseen layers enhances the story and message of self growth, re-grounding, and remembering our roots.
Work on display at The Birke Art Gallery from May 16th - June 20th, open 10am-4pm Monday through Friday. Meet more artists apart of "Friends in Low Places" group exhibition at the closing reception on June 20th 5pm-8pm during Huntington's Artwalk.
